Alexander Turnbull (father of #29622) was born in Grenada, circa 1801, the youngest son of Gordon Turnbull (1741-1809) and a Black slave named Laurence. Gordon subsequently manumitted Laurence for her faithful services. Gordon Turnbull by his last will and testament (of which I have a copy) devised a house and land to Laurence during her lifetime and after to his children Horatio Nelson Turnbull, Elizabeth Turnbull, Catherine Turnbull, Helen Turnbull and Alexander Turnbull. The children also inherited slaves and money for their maintenance and education.

Grenada was a huge melting pot of people from various corners of the world and the complexity and rich intricacy of family ties is wonderfully fascinating and satisfying to unravel.

Gordon Turnbull (who died 1809) had a brother named Alexander Turnbull (who died 1807) and who is my direct ancestor. Like his brother Gordon, my ancestor Alexander Turnbull also had a mixed race son named Alexander Turnbull. So there were two cousins in Grenada who shared the name Alexander Turnbull. However, since Alexander's son Alexander was sent to Scotland before 1807 to be trained in the wheel wright business and since there is no evidence that he ever returned to Grenada; it seems reasonable to assume that since Gordon's son Alexander was the only one of the name in the island in 1832, he was the father of Alexander Turnbull (d 1899) who went out to Australia.

Alexander's (d 1899) father Alexander (son of Gordon) began as a shopkeeper and later was a merchant. Alexander's elder brother Horatio Nelson Turnbull (also son of Gordon) was a teacher and later Master of the Central School as well as the parish clerk and liquor vendor.

Their father, Gordon Turnbull had owned several cotton and sugar estates and possibly engaged in mercantile activities. He published three books during the time that he lived in Grenada, was a member of the militia and held various minor offices in the colony.

Alexander Turnbull - of Australia - was baptized in Grenada in 1832. In this same year, his father Alexander Turnbull married Catherine Amelia Davis with whom he had four children (Rosetta Amelia Francis Turnbull, Alexander Aubrey Turnbull, Robert Ambrose Turnbull, and Margaret Albena Turnbull). After his wife Catherine died in 1847, Alexander had four more children by a woman named Mary Ann Lyon. There is no evidence that they married. Alexander Turnbull died circa 1861 /1862.

As far as the Scottish origins of the family: Alexander and Gordon were born in Edinburgh to Alexander Turnbull, wright and Elspeth Gordon. They were grandsons of George Turnbull, minister at Alloa and Elizabeth Glass.
