Other Life Events

AnecdoteJohn Little Lobdell was born on 07 May 1791 in Johnstown, New York. In 1821, he moved to West Feliciana Parish where he was a lawyer, owner of a sugar plantation and joined the Freemasons. On 18 Dec 1828 at Bayou Sara, West Feliciana Parish, John Lobdell married Ann Mathilda Stirling, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah (Turnbull) Stirling. John and Ann's daughter, Sarah Turnbull Lobdell, was born on 22 Aug 1845, at Bayou Sara, West Feliciana Parish, LA.
John Little Lobdell died on 05 Sep 1867 at Baton Rouge, LA.
His wife, Ann Mathilda Stirling, was born on 02 Jan 1811 at Bayou Sara, LA and died on 08 Aug 1890 at Bayou Sara, LA. (Ref: "Simon Lobdell--1646 of Milford, Conn. and his Descendants" and "Nicholas Lobden (Lobdell)--1635 of Hingham, Mass, and Some of His Descendants", Compiled and Published by Julia Harrison Lobdell, 1907, pp96-99.)

The 1830 US Census of West Feliciana Parish, LA enumerated the household of John Lobdell, age range 30-39 years (b. 1791), and his wife, most probably Ann Mathilda Stirling, age range 15-19 years, (b. 1811). John bought property in Natchitoches Parish and remained for a year; then, just before General Nathaniel P. Banks' raid through the northern part of the state (Louisiana), went on to Texas, settling in Smith County. In December 1865, he came back to his old Louisiana home, bringing the chattel with him, his health completely broken and fortune ruined.
