AnecdoteIn 1803 David Collins was the  commander of the ‘Calcutta' - the ship on which David Gibson arrived as a convict in 1803/4.  Its mission was to set up a presence in southern Australia at Port Phillip Bay, Victoria but finding that place unsuitable, Collins took his party to Hobart. He  became the first Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen’s Land. Previously he had been at the Sydney settlement (arriving with the First Fleet) where he was Judge Advocate.3
